Nairobi report estimates US$1.4 million 'geography discount' on 330 African podcast episodes and videos

SemaBOX's Creative Africa Intelligence Report, launched at Baraza Media Lab in Nairobi on 19 October, puts the 'geography discount' in advertising value across 330 African podcast episodes and videos at about US$1.4 million, The Star reported on 20 October.

SemaBOX's Creative Africa Intelligence Report (CAIR) 2026 estimates that 330 African podcast episodes and videos would have earned about US$1.4 million more in advertising value at rates paid in higher-paying markets, The Star reported on 20 October. The report was launched at Baraza Media Lab in Nairobi on 19 October.

SemaBOX calls the gap a "geography discount" and attributes it to where audiences and creators are located, not to the quality of the content. The company says the figures are modelled estimates, not verified creator payouts or the size of the whole African podcast market. The sample was chosen partly on engagement and upper-end advertising rates, so the numbers represent potential ceiling values.

The sample was 227 YouTube videos and 103 Spotify episodes published between June 2025 and July 2026. At African advertising rates it generated more than US$900,000. At rates in the US, UK and Australia, the same attention would have been worth more than US$2.3 million. The blended advertising rate in Africa was about 71% lower than in the comparator markets.

Engagement was not the weak point. The YouTube weighted engagement rate in the sample was 2.75%, against a benchmark of 1.5% to 2.2% in higher-paying markets. More than 65% of the YouTube videos ran 60 to 120 minutes, and more than 68% of top-performing shows put out both video and audio.

The Kenya News Agency, which also covered the launch, reported engagement rates of 3.32% in Uganda and 2.21% in Ghana, against 2.35% for a major international podcast episode. It said Kenya is the continent's most prolific podcasting market by production volume, while Nigeria commands a larger audience and South Africa generally earns more advertising revenue per view.

Access to platform revenue remains limited for African creators. Spotify's Partner Program was not available in any African market during the study period, and YouTube's Partner Program reaches only some of Africa's 54 countries.

About half the modelled advertising value would go to creators, the report says. At higher-market rates, the sample could support about 890 "income equivalents" of US$100 a month over the 14-month period. At current rates it supports about 352.

SemaBOX founder and chief executive Dan Aceda said, as quoted by The Star: "The geography discount is our biggest challenge, but it is also our greatest opportunity." He urged podcasters to build direct brand partnerships, strengthen their rate cards and rely less on platform advertising, the Kenya News Agency reported.

The report asks for wider access to monetisation programmes, more investment in systems that link podcast content to advertising demand, and clearer information on advertising rates and creator payments. It asks YouTube and Spotify to expand monetisation in Africa, including a phased pilot of the Spotify Partner Program in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

Eric Kinaga, executive director of Baraza Media Lab, called on global platforms to give African creators fair access to monetisation, and urged investors, advertisers and governments to treat the creative economy as a serious sector. "We cannot build a thriving creative economy through applause only," he said, as quoted by the Kenya News Agency.
