The Chinese Embassy in Rwanda held a pre-departure reception on 10 October 2026 for the first group of Rwandan students to study clinical medicine at undergraduate level at Inner Mongolia Medical University, the embassy said on 11 October. Thirty students attended.

The embassy said the 30 students will start a six-year course in China, with strong support from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the university.

Chinese Ambassador Gao Wenqi told the gathering that 2026 is the 55th anniversary of China–Rwanda diplomatic relations and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, according to the embassy. He said he hoped the students would make the most of the opportunity and, after finishing their studies, contribute to the development of Rwanda's health sector.

The embassy also said the expansion and renovation of Masaka Hospital, a Chinese-aided project, was handed over in August and would raise Rwanda's overall capacity to deliver medical care.

The Permanent Secretary of Rwanda's Ministry of Health spoke at the event. According to the embassy, he said China's support for Rwandan students to study in China was valuable help in training medical personnel and advancing the country's health sector.

Members of the Chinese medical team in Rwanda and Counsellor Gao Zhiqiang of the embassy were also present. A Chinese-owned garment company in Rwanda gave each student a winter cotton coat, the embassy said.
