After KJSEA: how Kenya places 1.2 million Grade 9 learners in senior school
Kenya's KJSEA exam for 1,206,028 Grade 9 candidates starts on 26 October; last year, results came out on 11 December, placements on 19 December and reporting day was 12 January 2026, Capital FM and The Star reported.

Kenya's Ministry of Education places Grade 9 learners in senior school with an automated system, not by one exam score. The Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), the national exam at the end of Grade 9, the last year of junior school, runs from 26 to 30 October, Capital FM reported on 6 October. A total of 1,206,028 candidates, about 1.2 million, will sit it. Another 1,380,463 learners will sit the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) at the end of Grade 6. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) runs both.
Before last year's placement, Julius Bitok, then Principal Secretary for Basic Education, said the government had secured over 2.4 million senior school places for 1.1 million learners, Capital FM reported on 17 November 2025.
Learners choose before they sit the exam. A Ministry circular dated 28 July 2026 set 24 August to 11 September for Grade 9 learners to pick a pathway, subject combinations and senior schools. The three pathways are STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science. The Kenya Times reported on 31 July that the circular, signed by Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa, let each learner choose 12 schools.
A later revision cut that number. Biznakenya, a Kenyan business news site, reported on 8 September that the Education Ministry had limited each learner to eight schools, down from 12 under the previous system: three Cluster 1 schools (the former national schools), two Cluster 2, two Cluster 3 and one Cluster 4. Citing the Directorate of Secondary Education, the site gave a selection window of 7 to 11 September and said the exercise covers public schools only, with private schools to be added later.
The score has three parts. KJSEA in Grade 9 counts for 60 per cent, school-based assessment in Grades 7 and 8 for 20 per cent, and the Grade 6 KPSEA for 20 per cent.
Results come as bands, not ranks. Eight points are grouped into four bands: Exceeding Expectation (8 and 7 points), Meeting Expectation (6 and 5), Approaching Expectation (4 and 3) and Below Expectation (2 and 1). Announcing last year's results on 11 December 2025, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said point 8 is the best, at Exceeding Expectation, and point 1 the lowest, at Below Expectation. He also said, as quoted by The Star: "An Approaching Expectation grade is sufficient for learners to progress to Senior School pathways."
Like China's zhongkao, KJSEA comes at the end of junior school and feeds the senior-school allocation, but the score is blended with two earlier assessments, results come in four bands, and each learner chooses a pathway and schools beforehand.
In December 2025, education officials said last year's placement was fully automated and weighed learners' choices, KJSEA performance, psychometric test results, equity and school capacity. The Ministry said the top performers in each STEM, social science and arts track would get priority for their preferred boarding schools. Learners unhappy with their placement had two weeks to revise their choices, the Nation reported on 19 December 2025.
In the 2025 cycle, results came out on 11 December. Placements were released on 19 December, and learners checked them by sending their KNEC assessment number by SMS to 22263. Learners were due to report to their schools on 12 January 2026.
