Arts & culture in Nairobi and East Africa Exhibition On now
What the Ground Remembers (Ibyo Ubutaka Bwibuka)
A participatory exhibition at the Rwanda Art Museum where six people pair their memories of the 1994 genocide with photographs of ordinary places.

About the event
Six participants with lived experience of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi chose everyday places tied to their memories and photographed them as they look today. The new photographs hang beside older images of the same sites.
A listening space lets visitors hear the participants' recordings in their own voices. The show includes the recorded voice of a participant who has publicly acknowledged his role in the killings; The New Times reports it was included after discussions with the survivors involved in the project. Works from the museum's permanent collection are shown alongside the new pieces.
The artists named are Timothy Wandulu, Benjamin Rusagara and Bless Aine Hirwa; the curators are Dr Natalie Tegama and Vivaldi Ngenzi.
