Kenya's KRA collects KES 90.05bn in September customs, KES 965m above target

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) collected KES 90.05 billion in customs revenue in September, KES 965 million above its target from the National Treasury, according to a statement the authority issued on 12 October 2026, as reported by Capital FM and Kenyans.co.ke.

KRA's Customs and Border Control Department reached 101.1% of its KES 89.088 billion target, Kenyans.co.ke reported. Collections were up 5.8% from KES 85.146 billion in September 2025.

Non-oil revenue came to KES 57.2 billion against a target of KES 55.42 billion, a surplus of KES 1.78 billion, Capital FM reported. The outlet said the non-oil collections covered fertilisers, iron and steel, palm oil and rice.

The growth in non-oil revenue "was driven by a 25.6 per cent increase in the overall value of imports", KRA said, as quoted by Pulse Kenya.

Kenyans.co.ke gave the volume figures from the statement. Bulk cargo rose 49.2%, imported motor vehicles rose 8.1%, and containerised cargo, counted in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), rose 8.2%.

KRA credited the Advance Cargo Declaration (ACD) system, greater use of data to manage cargo risk, faster processing of customs declarations and better targeting of high-risk consignments, Kenyans.co.ke reported. Pulse Kenya reported that KRA is also implementing reforms to make customs operations more efficient, transparent and predictable for traders.

Customs also beat its target in July, by KES 6.37 billion against a KES 86.16 billion goal, Kenyans.co.ke reported.

Across all revenue, Business Daily reported on 11 October 2026, citing National Treasury data, that ordinary revenue in the first quarter of the 2026/27 fiscal year (July to September) was KES 655.8 billion, KES 58.2 billion below target. The paper said every major tax head except import duty missed its target.
